A while back, a friend threw me an article by Niel Strauss and said "check it out". I met Neil, author of "The Game," when he was out here for a book signing. And, of course, I've heard stories from Lance and my other housemates at Project San Francisco. So, naturally, I was interested in his writing.Turns out he'd written a piece on Madonna for Rolling Stone. Now, it's a little known secret, but I love Madonna. In fact, I'm coming out of the closet about it right now! Madonna kicks ass. I've even got her song "Hung Up" as the ringtone on my phone!
She kicks ass for many reasons, but one of the many is that for over 20 years she has continued to reinvent herself. Madonna has never gotten stale, and never gotten boring.
Now, I know that article is a bit old now. I missed the boat on that one. But, I've been thinking about it still. I've been thinking about identity, and how we really define ourselves.
Have you ever met someone with real charisma? Real personality?
We all think we have an identity and a personality, but it's a hard shock to the system when we really think about how little personality we do have. How many places have we conformed to sameness? In how many ways have we dulled and hid our personality with a cold expressionless monotone? How many times do we hold opinions that we read or heard, but aren't even our own?
Ok, I'm not trying to depress you, but the fact is that in many ways we learn to hide our personality and our identity for fear of rejection and not being loved.
I know that I don't need to say it, but women want a Man with Personality. They want some one who knows who they are and what they stand for. In fact, it is in defining your self that you truly move from child to adult. From boy to Man.
So, let's take a look at all those places where we could express more of ourselves. Let's take a look at how we can define ourselves.
Stand up and make some noise.
And, you may ask, what's the best part of defining yourself? Well... You can always RE-define yourself. Nothing is written in stone.
"You could watch and say, 'I still don't know Madonna', and good. Because you will never know the real me. Ever."
Just like Madonna comes back year after year. With no incentive (she's got enough money to pay the bills), except her drive to keep evolving and changing and growing.
"I won't be happy till I'm as famous as God," she says. And, that's an identity. That is a presence.
I'm taking my first step now. Yes, I'm a Madonna fan (and oh yeah, she's frickin' hot!). There ya go. Tag that onto my personality. You may not be a fan, and I don't care.
Ok, now it's your turn. Take your first step now. Find one part of your personality that you've been holding back, and let it out now! Go tell someone, now. Do it!
Feels good, right?
So, one last pearl of wisdom for ya'...
"I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art."
That's the world I want to live in. A world where everyone treats themselves like a great work of art. A world full of personality and life.
Let's make it happen

Awesome article Dan, I really identify with your vibe. Is that a real Madonna quote? Thats a plan, thats confidence. :-)
Cam
Yes, Madonna really said:
"I won't be happy till I'm as famous as God,"
But, then again, she loves saying provocative things too.
Thanks for the comments.
